Reptiles & amphibians are fascinating animals, which inhabited our planet long before humans did. Their history dates as far back as 312 million years, when they advanced from reptiliomorph tetrapods, which modified themselves for living on dry land. Currently, they can be found in all continents, except Antarctica. Surprisingly, some are in closer relation to birds, for example crocodiles. While reptiles either have four limbs, or progressed from four-limbed ancestors (snakes), amphibians still have larval stage that they undergo in water. Their variation in size is truly astounding, from a tiny gecko, measuring only 17 mm -crocodiles, reaching 6 meters length. Their size also varies greatly, from a frog, which has 7.7 mm -giant salamander that has almost 2 meters in length.

Types of Reptiles & Amphibians

This group includes turtles, snakes, lizards, tuataras, crocodiles and alligators. Total species number reaches approximately 20 000. Currently there exist 7000 Amphibians species, among which - frogs, toads, salamanders, axolotl, newts, other species. Almost 90 percent of all existing amphibian species is comprised of frogs.

It has to be noted that they are predominantly considered exotic wild animals. The only disadvantage of such pet lies in their inability to show any affection towards the owner.

However, there some states, which allow keeping large species like pets if the owner meets the corresponding requirements. Certain people consider a large reptile ownership an illustration of their status, wealth. However, it must be noted that unlike small animals, large reptiles are extremely dangerous and ferocious animals that can attack unpredictably, require a lot of space.
