Rijksmuseum (National Gallery Amsterdam) is the Dutch national museum dedicated to art and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located on Museum Square in the South Amsterdam area, close to the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Amsterdam Museum and Concertgebouw. The museum presents 8,000 objects of art and history from a total collection of 1 million objects from 1200-2000 years.

Here is presented the most complete and most outstanding collection of Dutch painting of the “Golden Age” - the time of the rise of all spheres of life, which began in 1609, because Netherlands became an independent state. All four great artists of Holland of the 17th century are represented by their masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum: Franz Hals, Jacob van Reisdal, Wermer Delft and Rembrandt. The collection contains 20 paintings by Rembrandt, more than any other museum in the world.

On May 31, 1800, the Nationale Kunst-Galerij, the predecessor of the Rijksmuseum, opened its doors to the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague. The museum exhibited about 200 paintings and historical objects from the collections of Dutch stadiums.

In 1876, a new competition took place, and Pierre Kuipers won. Construction began on October 1, 1876. Both inside and outside, the building was adorned with references to the history of Dutch art. Another competition was held for the jewelry. The winners were W. Van Hove and J.F. Vermeilen for sculptures by G. Sturm for tiled countertops and paintings and V.F. Dixon for stained glass. The museum was opened in a new place on July 13, 1885.

In 1890, a new building was added southwest of the Rijksmuseum. Since the building was made from fragments of ruined buildings that together give an overview of the history of Dutch architecture, it became unofficially known as the “fragment building”. It is also known as the "south wing."

The Rijksmuseum building was designed by Pierre Kuipers and opened in 1885. It has the form of 2 squares that each have an atrium in their center. The building also contains a library. The fragment building, Philips branded wing, contains fragments of buildings that show the history of architecture in the Netherlands. The Rijksmuseum has been a rijksmonument (national heritage site) since 1970 and was included in the list of 100 best Dutch heritage sites in 1990. The Asian Pavilion was designed by Cruz and Ortiz and opened in 2013.

In 2012, the museum took an unusual step: to make about 125,000 high-resolution images for upload via the Rijksstudio web platform with plans to add another 40,000 images a year until the entire collection of a million works is available, according to Taco Dibbits, the director of the collections.
