Philadelphia is rich in its museums. However, not all tourists can afford to visit them all. You should definitely look into the largest art museum in the United States, which is always glad to its visitors.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located on a hill at the end of Benjamin Franklin Boulevard. The huge collections of this temple of art make it one of the largest art museums in the country and an absolute must for visiting the cultural center of the city.

The Philadelphia City Council funded a competition in 1895 to design a new museum building, but it was not until 1907 that plans were first drawn up for its construction on Fairmount, a rocky hill topped by the city’s main reservoir. Fairmont Parkway (renamed Benjamin Franklin Parkway), a large boulevard that diagonally crosses the grid of city streets. It was designed to end at the foot of the hill. However, there were conflicting opinions about whether to build one museum building or several buildings to accommodate individual collections. Architectural firms Horace Trumbauer, Zantzinger, Borie and Medary have worked together for more than a decade to resolve these disputes. The final project is mainly owned by two architects in the Trumbauer firm: Howell Lewis Shay for the building plan and layout, and Julian Abele for the details and perspective drawings.

Philadelphia Museum of Art officially opened in 1876 when it hosted the world exhibition, honoring  the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the USA. This exhibition was held in a well-known Fairmount Park and was called “Centennial Exhibition”. During the exhibition, people attending it could admire the works of art, architecture, sculpture and other forms of visual arts. The launch of modern museum building’s construction as we know it started in 1919. The building is accomplished in Greek style, and lined with statues of Greek gods, as well as Greek columns.

Nowadays, National Gallery Philadelphia is known as one of the greatest museums in the USA. It possesses around 225 000 items, divided into collections and corresponding galleries. Apart for the permanent collections that are displayed on a regular basis, museum holds around 15-20 specific exhibitions. The most prominent ones, for example, the collections of Cezanne or Dali works, draw attention of people from all over the world, who come to the museum in hopes of seeing their favorite art.
