Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became first astronaut, who was granted chance to go into universe, return safely on Earth. On April 12, 1961, he accomplished first ever manned space flight. Gagarin orbited Earth and returned safely home. He was Soviet pilot & cosmonaut, who flew around Earth on his Vostok 1 spacecraft. Gagarin was awarded “Hero of Soviet Union” – highest country honor, among many other medals and titles. His name became an integral history part, as well as human strength and ingenuity symbol.

Alan Shepard

Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was second human, who saw space with his own eyes & first American to ever go into space. He went into the sky almost month after Yuri Gagarin, on May 5, 1961 on rocket, called Mercury. He was also an Apollo 14 manned universe mission member & 5th person, who walked Moon. On Moon surface, he hit two golf balls. In 1971, ten years after his memorable first flight into space, he was awarded Rear Admiral rank. He became first astronaut, who reached that rank.

Valentina Tereshkova

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova was first woman, who flew into space. She was selected out of 500 contestants, became gender equality in space symbol. Western and Soviet newspapers alike wrote that her flight into space was gender barrier breach that has long prevented women from enlisting in wide row of men-only professions. On June 16, 1963, two years after Yuri Gagarin, she piloted Vostok 6 and successfully orbited Earth.
